Maternity Ward, Policlinico di Milano
A journey of care and sensitivity
Within the new Policlinico di Milano, one of the hospitals with the highest number of births in Italy, Park collaborates with the Fondazione Francesca Rava on the spatial and experiential identity of the maternity ward in the Padiglione Sforza. The intervention involves several areas of the ward — from the labour and delivery rooms to the observation and recovery areas, and the spaces dedicated to the medical staff — in a project that combines functionality and emotional sensitivity, welcoming and supporting mothers throughout the entire birth journey. Conceived as an environment capable of responding with empathy to the complex emotions that accompany this experience, the project explores the theme of inclusivity and care as a holistic experience, where every design detail contributes to creating comfort and reassurance. In a highly technical context, Park introduces elements of warmth and domesticity — natural materials, wooden surfaces, and environmental graphics — transforming the perception of the space and evoking a sense of familiarity. Light and material intertwine in a visual narrative made of soft gradients and references to nature. The result is a project that transcends functionality, transforming the maternity ward into a place of intimacy, listening, and welcome. An experience that interprets birth as a shared moment, capable of generating well-being and a sense of belonging from the very first moment of life.
