Ceto Cultural Hub

A new gateway to Valle Camonica, connecting heritage, landscape and community

At the southern edge of Valle Camonica, Ceto represents a new gateway to Valle dei Segni, one of the most significant territories for the understanding of prehistoric rock art. It is within this context that the new Cultural Hub is envisioned, with an approach that places the relationship between heritage, landscape and community at the centre of the project, looking beyond the scale of a single building to establish new connections with the wider territory.

The methodology with which Politecnica Building for Humans, Park and AMDL CIRCLE, in architectural co-leadership, together with Studio Mattioli, won the design competition promoted by the Municipality of Ceto takes the landscape as the matrix of the project. The future Hub will be developed within the former spinning mill of Società Filati Niggeler & Kupfer, but the awarded strategy goes beyond the transformation of the existing building: it considers the territory as a whole, identifying the dialogue between environment, cultural heritage and community as the guiding principle for the next stages of development.

Within this approach, the Pitoti, the prehistoric rock engravings that form Europe's most extensive semiographic archive, provide a key interpretative reference. The layered nature of the marks carved into the rock offers a way of engaging with the materiality, morphology and memory of the territory, guiding a research process towards an architecture rooted in its context.

Ceto lies within a landscape defined by Monte Concarena and Pizzo Badile Camuno, two of Valle Camonica's landmark mountains. Here, the Rock Drawings in Valle Camonica, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 as the first Italian site to receive the designation, form part of a cultural and landscape heritage of exceptional value. Since 2018, Valle Camonica has also been included in the Valle Camonica – Alto Sebino UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve, extending from the Adamello glacier to Lake Iseo.

The awarded vision imagines the new Cultural Hub as an open infrastructure and a potential element of reconnection, capable of restoring physical and landscape relationships. The proposal identifies exhibition spaces, research facilities, an auditorium, services and visitor reception areas among the future programme, together with a network of routes capable of connecting archaeology with the natural environment.

Looking towards 2029, the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO inscription, Valle Camonica has begun its candidacy for Italian Capital of Culture. Within this context, the methodology behind the winning proposal identifies the future Hub as a means of developing a new narrative for Valle Camonica, connecting the depth of its history with its contemporary landscape and the communities that inhabit it.

The next stages of development will translate this vision into an architectural project, further exploring the relationship between the future Hub, the existing heritage and the wider territorial system of Valle Camonica.
