Design is a pretext
a conversation with Francesco Faccin
‘Is design a medium or a purpose?’ Ranging from industrial design to craftsmanship, from self-production to social design, Faccin will demonstrate how design can be a powerful tool to understand and transform reality.
Constantly shifting his focus between industrial design, craftsmanship, self-production, social design, and limited editions for galleries, Francesco Faccin (Milan, 1977) views design as a powerful tool for understanding and transforming reality, a pretext for connecting different disciplines, and for engaging in open debate on urgent contemporary issues. After two years working with Enzo Mari, he spent five years from 2004 collaborating with luthier and architectural model maker Francesco Rivolta, gaining in-depth knowledge of wood and fine cabinetmaking techniques. In 2007, he opened his own studio in Milan, establishing his first collaborations with companies and building relationships with local artisans.Alongside his studio work, from 2009 to 2015, he consulted for architect and designer Michele De Lucchi. Since 2011, Faccin has taught at the Free University of Bolzano, the Made Program in Syracuse, and the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona. He also collaborates with other universities, in Italy and abroad, as a visiting professor and strategic director. His projects, published in major Italian and international design magazines, have received prestigious awards, including the Design Report Award, the European Product Design Award, and an honorable mention at the Compasso d'Oro. Some of his works have been acquired by globally recognized institutions such as the Vitra Design Museum, Triennale Milano, and Mudac Lausanne.
